What Are the Different Types of Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the best way for people who struggle with anxiety to get the dental care they need. Of course, you’ll need to consult with a dentist to determine if this option is right for you. During your consultation, you’ll probably want to ask about the two different methods dentists use to help patients relax. As a provider of sedation dentistry in Charleston, SC, Dale Probst, DMD wants to give you a brief overview of your options.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is usually administered in pill form. This option is designed to help a patient to relax while staying semi-conscious. After giving you your medication, our staff will safely place you in a dental chair and make sure you’re comfortable. We can even offer you things like blankets for maximum comfort and you’re welcome to bring your own headphones so you can listen to our digital music channels during your procedure. This is a great option for healthy adults who have mild to moderate anxiety about visits to the dentist and dental work.

IV Sedation

IV sedation uses an IV line (placed in your arm or hand) to administer the sedative medications directly into your bloodstream. Dentists typically find that this type of sedation dentistry is more effective than oral conscious sedation, as it allows dentists to administer precise amounts of medication. Should a patient not be sedated enough to ease their fears, more medication can be administered. This option is ideal for patients who experience severe dental anxiety and desire maximum comfort.

*Please note that you will need a driver to accompany you to your appointment, regardless of which sedation option you choose.
