What Causes Sensitive Teeth?

Sensitive teeth are no joke. Pain and discomfort make it hard to enjoy eating and drinking. Unfortunately, it’s a fairly common condition. Many patients of family dentist Dale Probst, DMD come to our office for help with tooth sensitivity. Part of controlling the issue is understanding what causes sensitive teeth. Here are several things to watch out for.

  • Harsh treatment of your teeth – While a general dentist will always stress the importance of brushing, it’s important that you do it the right way. Brushing too hard will actually weaken the enamel, increasing your chances for tooth sensitivity. Using too much mouthwash can hurt your teeth, too. With this in mind, we recommend that you only use soft-bristled toothbrushes and a gentle fluoride mouthwash.
  • Disease or tooth injury – Gingivitis, gum recession, and cracked teeth can all lead to tooth sensitivity. If you’re concerned that you have any of the above conditions, schedule an appointment with a family dentist.
  • Acidic foods and drinks – Limit the number of acidic foods and drinks you consume. Soda, grapefruit, and coffee are just a few examples. Your dentist can recommend healthier alternatives for your teeth that will also reduce the pain you’re experiencing.
  • Dental procedures – Often, many patients find that their teeth are a bit sensitive after a dental procedure. Some people only experience sensitivity after a procedure like a root canal or a filling, while some feel discomfort after a routine cleaning. Every person’s mouth and teeth are different. The important thing is that you communicate with your dentist about any pain you’re experiencing. If it seems to linger for weeks, check back in to make sure everything is healing properly.

If you’re tired of struggling with sensitive teeth, schedule an appointment with a James Island family dentist. Dale Probst, DMD wants to help you eat and drink comfortably. Let’s work together to create a pain-free smile!
