- Drink lots of water, especially if it’s from the tap – With the hot, humid weather we experience in the Lowcountry, you need to stay hydrated. The best way to do that is by drinking water throughout the day. In addition to keeping your body healthy, water will wash away any plaque-causing bacteria from your teeth. If you have municipal water that’s fortified with fluoride, you can increase the strength and health of your tooth enamel while you drink. Drinking water will also improve the smell of your breath. No mints required!
- Stay away from carbonation – Carbonated drinks are very acidic, which can wear down and, over time, even destroy your tooth enamel. Avoid making this choice if at all possible. If you absolutely must drink carbonated drinks, it’s best to use a straw. This will reduce the area of contact between your teeth and the drink.
- Consider drinking tea – But not the sweet tea we all know and love. The sugar in that beverage isn’t good for your teeth. But other types of tea can do wonders for your teeth. That’s because the compounds in tea suppress bacteria. Less bacteria means a decreased chance of tooth decay and gum disease.
